Qualitative research

Much of my research practice falls under the "Qualitative" umbrella. During my time as Digital Experience Designer I have performed many research activities with various methods. Due to very tight budget and other constraints, some of the techniques I used were slightly unorthodox.

Still, I do have experience with:

  • Desk research

  • In depth interviews

  • Personas creation

Other activities, which yielded insights, but not necessarily in an officially recognised methodology include:

  • Client communication related to case study articles

  • Reviews analysis

  • Support queries analysis

  • User segmentation

Quantitative research

While much of my experience is related to qualitative research, I do have some experience with quantitative research as well. Methods and tools I used include:

  • Surveys design

  • Surveys analysis

  • Net Promoter Score

  • Google Analytics 4 / Hotjar

I have a basic understanding of descriptive statistics (and trying to learn more). While I may not shine at poker, I can still perform a chi-square test or create a box plot.

Journey Mapping

During my career I have learned to create journey maps to illustrate the user/client journey. This allowed me to find pain points and strategic blind spots and helped my team make critical decisions about strategy.

Workshop facilitation

Twice during my career I ran UX related workshops: once in person (real time) and once online (asynchronously). Both of them were fairly successful and produced deliverables which were later used by the team. However I mention this mostly to show that I am not afraid to run an event and talk to a large group of people, including my superiors.

AI Usage / Task automation

I am by no means an AI enthusiast, but I found Artificial Intelligence tools to be very useful in day to day life of a researcher, especially with a tight budget and limited time. I have used AI with great success to delegate repeatable tasks or analyse data sets too large for a human to dig through.

About me

About me

Experience

2014 – 2023

Graphic Designer

I have spent most of my professional life as a graphic designer. I worked with various companies, did a little bit of freelance, dabbled in typeface design. During those years I have developed a strong work ethic and learned to handle people.

In 2021 I joined Elastic Email. Working with the product team in this SaaS company exposed me to ideas related to User Experience. Seeing an opening I switched roles and became…

2023 – 2026

Digital Experience Designer

In this new role I swapped designing the website for actually taking care of it and trying to understand it. I used GA4 and Hotjar to track visitors' movements and to gather insights about them.

As time went by my responsibilities widened to include more and more active research. Even though the budget was always tight, through grit and resourcefulness I have managed to glean useful insights about our customers.

What makes me tick

While making a living as a graphic designer I always strived to base my work on a set of objective criteria, like gestalt principles, or principles of good design by Dieter Rams or rules of typography. To my dismay people who reviewed my work were not using the same criteria and the final verdict often came down to a person's own sense of style. I often found myself designing for "the boss" or "the client" instead of the user.

That was when I learned about UX, and how it incorporated research into its core tenets. This was something objective. Something true if done right. And I wanted in on that. I made a pivot in my career and started learning the secret of User Experience (or any other Experience for that matter).

Nowadays, with a little experience under my belt, I can say this was the right choice. What surprised me most was that learning about users (or customers) proved to be much more than just fuel for good design. It became a passion of its own. It feels invigorating, being able to learn what the real people behind the product think and feel. And it is awesome to be able to pass this knowledge on to people making strategic decisions.

I am not looking back.
